Say hello to one of the best and easiest classic fall desserts, apple crisp! Sweet baked apples covered with buttery, toasted, cinnamon oat crisp topping. The epitome of fall baking! Perfect to use up those fresh picked apples from the orchard or farmers market.
How to Make the Best Apple Crisp
Apple crisp is another one of the quicker and easier desserts to throw together. You only need a handful of basic ingredients that you probably already have in your pantry. The end result is an irresistible blend of fall spices and produce!
Ingredients:
- Apples – obviously the star fruit here!
- Lemon juice – to keep our apples bright and fresh looking
- Sugars – both granulated and brown sugar for a variety of sweet flavor
- Spices – warming cinnamon and nutmeg
- Cornstarch – to thicken the apple mixture
- Oats – the key ingredient in our crisp topping
- Flour – helps create the perfect crumbly topping
- Salt – because duh! all desserts need a little salt
- Butter – provides flavor and brings the crisp topping together
Process:
- Prepare the apples: peel, core and slice (or dice) the apples. Toss with lemon juice, sugars, cornstarch, and spices. Place into the prepared pan.
- Prepare the crisp topping: combine oats, sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt. Use your hands or a pastry cutter to add in the cold diced butter to the dry ingredients until the butter has broken down into smaller pieces and clumps begin to form.
- Sprinkle topping evenly over the apples.
- Bake: bake until the topping is golden brown and the apples are bubbling.
- Serve: top warm crisp with vanilla ice cream and salted caramel sauce! Enjoy!
What type of apples should I use?
There are a few varieties of apples that are better suited to being baked than others. The most popular and readily available types are Granny Smith and Honeycrisp. These apples hold up well under heat and keep a firm texture rather than becoming mushy. Granny Smith is more tart in flavor and Honeycrisp is sweeter. Use either one in this apple crisp recipe or use a combination of the two.
Other great apple varieties to try are Golden Delicious, Braeburn, Pink Lady, or Winesap (if you can find it). Have fun and try your favorite apple type or a combination!
