A true holiday favorite, classic pecan pie! That familiar sweet and crunchy filling bundled into a buttery flaky homemade pie crust. So simple, yet so satisfying!
Let’s dive into this tried and true variety of this classic pie today. I’m sticking with the standard ingredients but adding a touch of spice and browned butter to give it my own special twist without changing the traditional elements too much.
Let’s make Pecan Pie!
In terms of pie making, pecan pie is one of the simpler recipes to make, in my opinion. Not a lot of prep or fancy ingredients required. For some, making the pie dough might be the most daunting part. But it shouldn’t be! In my last post I detailed exactly how to make the perfect all-butter pie crust from scratch! Check it out here!
If you’re not quiet ready to tackle homemade pie crust just yet, no worries. A store-bought crust will work just as well.
After that it’s literally just mixing together all of the filling ingredients, pouring into the pie shell and baking it! You can add one additional step if you like. Which is to lay whole pecans across the top of the filling for decoration. It can be one large circle (such as in the photos below) or you could cover the entire top of the pie! It’s up to you!
Ingredients:
- Butter – melt and brown your butter before starting. There’s only a small amount of butter in the recipe so it won’t take very long to brown. As always, keep a close eye on it so it doesn’t burn.
- Eggs – providing structure and hold to the filling.
- Brown Sugar – using brown vs granulated sugar in this recipe because it provides a deeper level of sweet flavor due to the molasses in brown sugar.
- Corn Syrup – a traditional ingredient to pecan pie, providing not only additional sweetness but also helping to bind the ingredients together.
- Vanilla extract – bringing a depth of flavor to the overall dessert.
- Salt – key ingredient in any baked good, but especially helpful in balancing out the sugars.
- Cinnamon – adding a dash of holiday spice and warmth. Similar to the vanilla extract the cinnamon adds another layer of flavor to make the pie more interesting.
- Pecans – the star of the show! You can buy pre-chopped pecans to make the prep even easier! But I personally tend to buy whole pecans and chop them myself. This way I still have whole nuts to decorate the top of the pie with.

Description
A super simple recipe for classic pecan pie. Sweet and crunchy filling nestled in a buttery flaky crust, a perfect holiday favorite.
Ingredients
- 1 single pie crust, unbaked (homemade or store-bought)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted and browned
- 3 large eggs
- 1 cup brown sugar
- 1 cup light corn syrup
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 2 cups pecans, chopped (optional: additional whole pecans for topping)
Instructions
- Prepare the single pie crust dough according to recipe directions. Roll out to about 1/4″ thick and place into a 9 inch pie dish. Crimp or finish the edges as desired. Place prepared pie crust into the freezer for 30 min while you make the filling.
- Preheat oven to 350°F.
- In a large bowl whisk together eggs, brown sugar, corn syrup, vanilla, salt and cinnamon. Whisk in the melted browned butter. Stir in chopped pecans. Pour filling into prepared pie crust. If desired, decoratively arrange whole pecans around the top of the pie.
- Place pie on a cookie sheet for easier movement to and from the oven. Place on the center rack in the preheated oven. Bake for about 50-60 minutes, or until the edges of the filling are set but the center has a slight jiggle. Place pie on a wire rack and allow to cool completely before cutting into. For best results allow pie to cool overnight or place in the fridge for several hours.
