For my birthday this year I had a vision! Well actually Pinterest gave me the vision but regardless, it was to make a cake covered entirely in sprinkles! I know, I know, I may as well have been turning 7 but I was ridiculously excited about this cake!
Since I wanted to focus on the decorating I didn’t go super wild with the cake flavor but went back to an all time favorite, a classic chocolate cake. One of the best chocolate cake recipes I’ve tried is by Hershey’s, it never fails to be a crowd pleaser. For the frosting I opted for a rich vanilla bean buttercream that would give a nice background for the colorful sprinkles, which are the star of the show after all. Even though I’m a chocoholic at heart I also love the contrasting flavors of chocolate and vanilla when paired together.
Funny side note – I grossly over estimated the amount of sprinkles needed to cover a two tier cake and ended up with enough for probably 3 or 4 full cakes! Thank goodness for return policies!
I loved the way my cake turned out! The sprinkle process took a bit longer than I thought and was easier as a two person job but just a little more practice and I’ll have it down! Perhaps next time I’ll work on a smaller scale. 🙂
Happy Birthday to me!

The thriftiest (we have a Scottish last name, after all) place to get sprinkles is at Smart & Final. I just checked my stash in the cupboard: 22 oz of Non Pareils were about $5-6. Another thought to make it easier: cupcakes so there’s no need to put it on the sides. (I do all cakes as cupcakes now so I don’t have to wash tools to cut the cake. Grandma’s birthday “cake” last November was cupcakes on a big plate with a cake tier thing so they were on two levels.)
