Say hello to your new favorite fall condiment, apple butter! That’s right friends! Super easy to make, requiring just a few minutes of prep time. Then letting your slow cooker do all the hard work. Apple butter is an amazingly concentrated apple flavored spread/sauce/condiment. Think of it like a thicker and more concentrated apple sauce.
Not only is it perfect for your morning toast this time of year, but apple butter also pairs well with both sweet and savory dishes. Use it in all kinds of baking recipes, to flavor savory dinners such as pork chops, or even to whip up a fall themed cocktail. Your imagination is the limit!
In fact, two of my favorite things to make during the fall are these apple butter breakfast rolls, and my favorite apple pie (recipe coming in the near-ish future).
How to Make Apple Butter in a Slow Cooker
Start by picking your favorite apples for baking/cooking with. There are many different varieties available at orchards right now and it would be fun to try out a few different types. Since I haven’t made the annual trip to orchards in my area yet I opted for an easily available variety, the Honeycrisp!
I love Honeycrisp apples for their balance of flavor, mildly sweet, crisp and a hint of tartness. But choose whichever type is your favorite.
There is minimal prep happening here. Peel, core and roughly chop your apples. Add them to your slow cooker along with all the other ingredients. Give everything a good stir then let the slow cooker take over. Stir the mixture once about halfway through cooking. Next, we’re going to blitz everything in a blender to get a super smooth texture. Lastly, place back on the heat to thicken up a touch more.
Let me just say your house is going to smell AHHH-MAZING while you have the apples cooking! Better than any fall scent a candle can provide, that’s for sure!
Making a seasonal spread such as this can also make a wonderful gift! Use smaller 4oz sized jars to package up the apple butter and hand out to friends and family. If need be, this recipe can be doubled to produce a larger quantity for all those friends of yours! 😄
Enjoy! And let me know if you give this recipe a try!
PrintSlow Cooker Apple Butter
- Prep Time: 10 min
- Cook Time: 6-10 hours
- Total Time: 6 hours 10 min – 10 hours 10 min
- Yield: 2 pints 1x
Description
An addictive apple butter spread, lightly spiced and full of concentrated apple flavor. Perfect on toast or to use in many baking recipes.
Ingredients
- 2 lbs apples, peeled, cored, and chopped (I like Honeycrisp apples)
- 1 cup apple cider
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1/4 tsp allspice
- Pinch of salt
Instructions
- Combine all ingredients together into a slow cooker. Cover and cook on low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours, stirring halfway through cooking.
- Once apples are soft use a high powered blender or an immersion blender to blend the apples until smooth. Return to the slow cooker and continue cooking, uncovered on high for 2 hours, stirring occasionally. The apple butter will thicken slightly but will still be runny while its warm. It should be able to coat the back of a spoon.
- Turn the slow cooker off and allow the mixture to cool to room temperature. Store in glass jars in the fridge or freeze if not planning to use right away.
